These photographs came out of three meditative and glorious pilgrimages to Italy. In 1999, during a difficult time in my life, I toured Tuscany and Umbria, residing in convents and monasteries. A few years later I returned to Italy and gave myself an "art sabbatical" in Florence for a month in the spring. Then, in 2009, I received an Emily Harvey Foundation residency, which granted me an apartment in Venice, Italy, for six magical weeks.
